About the Hijri Calendar

The Hijri calendar consists of 12 months. The list below shows the Hijri months in order. The Hijri calendar began in the 7th century CE, on June 28, 623, marking the important event of the Prophet's migration from Mecca to Medina.

There are several differences between the Gregorian and Hijri calendars. For example, the Gregorian calendar is based on Earth's orbit around the sun, while the Hijri calendar is based on Earth's orbit around the moon.

The Gregorian calendar has 365-366 days in a year, while the Hijri calendar has 354-355 days. This is because Hijri months range from 29-30 days, while Gregorian months range from 30-31 days.

Detailed Hijri Month Information

1Muharram

The first month in the Hijri calendar is Muharram. This month is celebrated as the Islamic New Year by Muslims worldwide. The designation of Muharram as the first month of the Islamic calendar was established by Caliph Umar ibn Khattab. Muharram is considered a sacred month and marks the completion of the Hajj pilgrimage for Muslims.

2Safar

The second month in the Hijri calendar is Safar. The name Safar means "empty" or "void," serving as a reminder for young Arabs to begin their long journeys away from their hometowns.

"There is no 'Adwa (contagious disease), no Thiyarah (believing in omens), no Hamah (owl), and no Safar (believing Safar month brings misfortune). Avoid leprosy as you would avoid a lion." (Bukhari)

3Rabi' al-Awwal

The third month in the Hijri calendar is Rabi' al-Awwal. This month marks the birth of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Rabi' al-Awwal means the return of young people from their journeys back to their hometowns.

"This is the day I was born, the day I was appointed as a Prophet, and the day the Quran was first revealed to me." (Muslim)

4Rabi' al-Thani

The fourth month in the Hijri calendar is a time when young people graze their camels and sheep, marking the return to daily activities after long journeys. The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught his followers to work hard and earn their livelihood through halal means.

"No food eaten by a person is better than that earned through their own labor." (Bukhari)

5Jumada al-Awwal

The fifth month in the Hijri calendar marks the beginning of the dry season, making many lands dry and difficult to cultivate. However, in these seemingly difficult conditions, the Prophet (peace be upon him) taught his followers to remain grateful and trust in Allah's provision.

"And if you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]." (Quran, Ibrahim: 7)

6Jumada al-Thani

The sixth month in the Hijri calendar symbolizes the end of difficult times and the arrival of a new month. This month encourages Muslims to maintain hope and trust in positive change, in accordance with the teachings of the Prophet (peace be upon him).

"Hope for the best from Allah." (Tirmidhi)

7Rajab

The seventh month is a blessed month that means "to begin" or "to abstain." Rajab becomes significant with the event of the Isra' and Mi'raj of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). An event recorded in the Quran. This is an extraordinary spiritual and physical journey that signifies Allah's greatness and mercy.

"Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa." (Quran, Al-Isra: 1)

8Sha'ban

Sha'ban is the eighth month in the Hijri calendar. The name Sha'ban comes from the word sha'ba, which means to branch out or disperse. This is because during this month, the Arabs in the pre-Islamic period would disperse to various places in search of water. Sha'ban is also a month of preparation for the upcoming month of Ramadan. During this month, Muslims are encouraged to perform more voluntary fasts, especially on the 15th of Sha'ban, known as Nisfu Sha'ban.

9Ramadan

Ramadan is the ninth month in the Hijri calendar and is the most noble and blessed month. The name Ramadan comes from the word ramdha, which means scorching heat or burning. This is because at the time of naming this month, the sun in Arabia was extremely hot and scorching. Ramadan is the month of fasting for Muslims, where they are required to abstain from eating, drinking, and other actions that invalidate fasting from dawn until sunset. This month also includes the Night of Power (Lailatul Qadar), a night considered better than a thousand months.

10Shawwal

Shawwal is the tenth month in the Hijri calendar. The name Shawwal comes from the word shala, which means to raise or leave. This is because during this month, female camels would have less milk. Shawwal is a month of victory for Muslims after completing the fasting during Ramadan. This month also includes the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, a day full of joy and forgiveness.

11Dhu al-Qi'dah

Dhu al-Qi'dah is the eleventh month in the Hijri calendar and is one of the sacred months. The name Dhu al-Qi'dah comes from the word qa'ada, which means to sit or not to depart. This is because during this month, the Arabs in the pre-Islamic period would not go to war, considering this month sacred where fighting was prohibited. Dhu al-Qi'dah is also a month of rest for Muslims before they perform the Hajj pilgrimage in the following month.

12Dhu al-Hijjah

Dhu al-Hijjah is the twelfth and final month in the Hijri calendar, and it is the most magnificent and virtuous month. The name Dhu al-Hijjah comes from the word hajj, which means pilgrimage or visit. This is because during this month, Muslims from all over the world gather in the holy city of Mecca to perform the Hajj pilgrimage. Dhu al-Hijjah is also the month of sacrifice for Muslims, where they perform the ritual sacrifice on the 10th of Dhu al-Hijjah, known as Eid al-Adha.
